Protect valuable forest seedlings from UV damage with Eclipse

Sun damage to delicate seedling nursery stock leads to major financial losses to the producers. Up to one-third of all seedlings are killed by sun damage, both in the nursery and once they are planted in the forest. Protecting seedlings with Eclipse during the first 24 months of nursery growth, will give the final transplant a more secure start with a further developed root system and
larger foliar area.

Proven

Eclipse is a calcium carbonate and boron colloidal liquid that has been proven effective in the control of sunburn on onions. Eclipse is extremely effective when sprayed directly on the seedling surface throughout the season to provide a protective coating blocking harmful UV damage. Eclipse provides a uniform coat of protection and a more efficient reflective protection than traditional sunscreen products. In addition to UV protection, Eclipse’s calcium and boron are nutritional soil amendments.

Ease of Use

Eclipse is a convenient liquid formulation, which is easy to store, mix and spray. Unlike hard to handle powders, Eclipse quickly goes into solution with minimal agitation. With its small particle size, Eclipse stays in suspension during spraying to give a uniform coat of protection. Eclipse is comprised of food grade calcium carbonate and can be applied without the use of respirators or specialized equipment in the field. Eclipse’s food grade calcium carbonate does not require specialized PPE for applicators.

Recommended Applications

General Application Guidelines
To protect most crops, four to six applications of Eclipse during the growing season are sufficient. Additional applications may be required under conditions of persistent high temperature, increased UV exposure, rain events or other circumstances that may deteriorate the coverage of the crop.

Seedlings
The recommended use rate of Eclipse is a 10% solution. Effective coverage can be attained applying 10 gallons of solution per 100 sq. feet of planted seedlings. Four to eight applications per season are recommended.

Pome Fruit, Mangoes, Avocadoes and Pomegranates
Eclipse should first be applied when the fruit is 3/4” or 20 mm at a rate of 3 gallons/acre in 100 gallons of water or less as long as thorough coverage of the fruit is achieved. The second application should be applied 10 to 14 days later at a rate of 2 gallons/acre in 100 gallons of water or sufficient water to insure thorough coverage. Aerial applications can be made on these commodities.
Subsequent applications of Eclipse should be made at 2-3 week intervals, or as needed to maintain coverage of the fruit, at a rate of 2 gallons/acre in 100 gallons of water or sufficient water to insure thorough coverage. Do not spray until point of run off, as coverage will be inadequate.

Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplants and Melons
Appling Eclipse at a rate of 2-3 gallons/acre in 20-50 gallons of water to the plant is beneficial in limiting sun damage to the exposed portion of the plant. An additional application using 2 gallons/acre should be made 7-10 days after the initial application or immediately after the initial harvest. Use the lowest possible application pressure and/or fan speed to ensure good coverage.

Cherries
Appling Eclipse at a rate of 5 gallons in 100 gallons of water per acre applied directly to foliage within 7 days after harvest will help to reduce the incidence of doubling in cherries. An additional application should be applied 14-21 days from the initial application at a rate of 5 gallons in 100 gallons of water to the acre.

Tree Nuts, Olives, and Figs
Eclipse should first be applied when the fruiting bodies are 5/8” or 15 mm. Similar rates and application timing as in pome fruit and citrus should be followed. Aerial applications can be made on these commodities.

Onions, Garlic and Potatoes
Ground Application: Applying Eclipse at a rate of 2-3 gallons/acre in 20-50 gallons of water after the “burn down” of the foliage is beneficial in limiting sun damage to the exposed portion of the plant. Aerial applications can be made on these commodities.
Aerial Application: Applying Eclipse at the prescibed rate in 10 gallons of water is beneficial to protect exposed crops from sun damage. If the crop is dug/dried above the ground surface, Eclipse can be applied to the exposed crop. An additional application of Eclipse can be applied 3-4 days after the initial application at at the subsequent presiribed rate in 10 gallons of water.
